What comes to mind when asked, what is the best, recent Japanese Role-Playing Game (JRPG)? Many people would mention Final Fantasy, Shin Megami Tensei, or maybe even Pokemon, but one title that many have forgotten is Square Enix’s, Dragon Quest 11.
Experiencing the amazing world, monsters, characters and heart-felt story over the summer was a treat. Everyone should at least once play Dragon Quest 11. Not only does Dragon Quest introduce a loveable cast of enemies and party members alike, but the game’s overworld is filled with new locations waiting to be discovered.
The story revolves around our hero being sent to Heliodor capital, to reclaim his throne as prince to a neighboring kingdom. Even more importantly than his rightful heir, is his duty to uphold light to the world as the luminary, knight of the World Tree. However, when he meets the king of Heliodor, he’s deemed the darkspawn, one who will bring ruin and darkness to the world.
As the story slowly transforms from a light-hearted fantasy, into something much sinister, as true colors begin to reveal themself. The plot really enticed me, as something much more than a cut and dry zero to hero story. Your party members seem a bit one-sided at first, but as your quest progresses, they start to become characters you can actually care for and fight alongside with.
Overall Dragon Quest 11 is a must play for people who love a good story, great characters, enemies and state of the art world-building. If you have free time to enjoy a 100+ hour JRPG, then pickup Dragon Quest to discover your new favorite JRPG!
